Dental bonding is a way to restore your smile’s beauty that is quick and painless. It is the application of a tooth-colored resin that can repair fractured, chipped or discolored teeth. It can also be used as a way to make the teeth appear longer and as a cosmetic alternative to fillings.
Dental bonding is considered one of the easiest and least expensive dental procedures. A composite resin is used that can be shaped and polished to match the look and color of the surrounding teeth. Bonding can also be a cosmetic alternative to fillings. It can protect part of the tooth’s root if it has been exposed due to gum recession.
The process is relatively simple. Once the shade guide has been used to select the color for your composite resin, the surface of the tooth can be slightly etched to allow a conditioning liquid to coat the tooth and act as an adhesive for the bonding material. Then the resin is applied to the tooth and is molded and shaped until it is in the proper shape. It is then hardened, and a final shaping occurs. This brings out the sheen of the resin to make it match the surrounding teeth.
Teeth staining substances can also stain the resin used in the bonding process. So it is best to avoid tea, coffee, red wine and cigarette smoke during the first 48 hours after the procedure. They are cared for like other teeth and need to be brushed and cleaned by a dental hygienist every six months.
