Causes and Risk

The bacteria that leads to plaque build-up is the main cause of gum disease. There are many other factors that can increase someone’s risk of developing gum disease including tobacco use, smoking, alcohol intake, malnutrition, stress, and certain prescription medications.

Stages of Gum Disease

There are different stages of gum disease that have several different symptoms. Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease and is the inflammation of the gums. This is caused by a buildup of bacterias that begin to irritate the gums. Symptoms include red, swollen, and bleeding gums, bad breath, and spacing between teeth. Periodontitis is the second stage of gum disease and is caused when gingivitis is left untreated. The plaque begins to turn into tartar and cannot be removed by simply brushing the teeth as it is found below the gum line. This stage of gum disease requires treatment, but the effects can still be reversed. Symptoms are similar to gingivitis and also include loose teeth and pockets between the teeth and gums. Advanced Periodontitis is the third and final stage of gum disease. At this point, the effects of gum disease cannot be reversed. It involved tooth decay and permanent tooth loss. The entire set of teeth may be effected at this point and can lead to other severe oral health issues.
